With the summer coming to an end, lots of movies have been released. This comes as no surprise to any movie-lover, given that September, along with January, February, and August, are all considered “dump months” for film creators. September is especially release-heavy because this is the time most producers decide to release more horror and thrillers. The highest grossing movies for the week of September 30, 2022 have been Barbarian, Don’t Worry Darling, and The Woman King.

Barbarian is a horror film written and directed by Zach Cregger. Barbarian follows Tess Marshall, played by Georgina Campbell, a young woman visiting for a job interview and who books and AirBnB. She finds out the house was double booked, by a man named Keith, played by Bill Skarsgård, who is already staying there. Tess ends up staying with him, but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear in the house than the fact that it’s double booked.

The psychological thriller that is Don’t Worry Darling follows Alice, played by Florence Pugh, and Jack Chambers, played by Harry Styles, a couple living in the utopia that is Victory. Everything in Victory is the same; the house is the same, all the men go to work, all the women stay at home, and everything revolves around the seeming fact that conformity is the only way to maintain balance. Soon, Alice begins to question whether Victory’s “perfection” is really true and worth it, and a her discoveries threaten to ruin the community and the couple themselves.

The Woman King tells the story General Nanisca’s, played by Viola Davis, army of powerful women, trained to defend their nation. As an epic war film based very loosely on history and starring an amazing cast with women of color, The Woman King has been a hit, especially considering the September release in a competitive time as viewers are regularly coming back to the theaters post-COVID.

All of these movies are ready to be enjoyed at Cinemark 17 and XD near The Woodlands Mall.
